Treehouse Sangha — Offering Zen Meditation in the Albany area of New York
The Treehouse Sangha offers basic services in a Soto Zen meditation group, in the Upstate Capital Region of New York. Soto Zen meditation practice is focused on the direct experience of sitting meditation, shikantaza. Reuben Shojin Bruchez, as the Practice Group Leader, and the rest of the members of our Sangha group, are happy to offer help to the personal experience of meditation practice, and support of a lay practice community in the Capital Region of New York. To that end, we welcome anyone interested in learning more about Zen, meditation, and mindfulness practice within everyday life.
Guidelines for Sitting with a Group:
Many people come to meditation practice with a bit of trepidation, and concern regarding what is expected of them, as a newcomer to meditation practice within a group. Here are some simple guidelines, to help.
Do I have to take my shoes off?
We ask that you do. It is a mark of respect for the space. There is a bench by the door, and space to put your shoes and coat.
What if I’m unsure of what I’m supposed to be doing?
That’s great, and a beautiful thing. If you are new to the group, show up a little early, so we can fill you in on the basics of how we practice.
How long do I have to sit still?
We sit for 25 minute periods of zazen, or sitting meditation, with 5 minutes of kinhin, or walking meditation, following. We can make accomidations for newcomers who are anxious about longer periods of meditation. If you need to leave early, we ask, if possible, you wait for a kinhin period to excuse yourself. We promise we won’t chase you down if you need to leave.
What do I wear?
We recommend loose, comfortable clothing. Muted colors are appreciated, and if you have a preferred scent, we ask that you keep it light.
How much does it cost?
No donation is required, but no donation is refused. If you want to offer dana, or generosity, many people find that somewhere around $10 is helpful to us, and comfortable for them. We are also happy with offerings of service, or ongoing pledges of support. Dana Paramita is best done as an offering that is comfortable to you.
