Remembering Our Founder

Dear Friends of the Silent Thunder Order,
This November marks the 101st Anniversary of our Lineage Founder Soyu Matsuoka Roshi’s birth.   During November each year we deeply reflect on Matusoka Roshi’s historic efforts to transmit Buddha’s Teachings to America.  Matsuoka Roshi (November 25, 1912 – November 20, 1997) was born and passed away in the month of November.  He first came to the United States in 1939 at the request of Soto Zen Headquarters in Japan and was an important early Zen pioneer.
When I personally think of Matsuoka Roshi, I remember his warm sincere spirit, his strong resolve, and compassion to help everyone in their life and along the Buddha’s Path.  Matsuoka Roshi taught that everything that we encounter in life is part of our Zen Training.  One of his favorite expressions was “Nchi niche kori ko jitsu”, “Every day is a fortunate day.”  In Zen practice, we find our way each day, each moment of our lives.
Currently, the Matsuoka Archive Project within STO is working to gather historical information through interviewing his surviving students and close associates.   We are gathering written and oral accounts of Matsuoka Roshi’s teachings, stories, and history.   This also includes gathering photos, articles, and recordings, of and about Matsuoka Roshi.   Through these efforts we plan to develop a comprehensive bio of Matsuoka Roshi and his teachings that will stand beside the two volumes of his talks that have been published, The Kyosaku and Mokurai.   Please let me know if you are interested in helping in this important undertaking.
One important way you can assist in the Matsuoka Archive Project and STO, at this time, is by making a donation in memory of Matsuoka Roshi through the STO web site, www.storder.org, or sending a contribution to STO at the address below.   With your help we will continue the spirit and work of our Founder Matsuoka Roshi, and preserve his teaching.

Thank you very much for your generous support.
Gassho,
Zenku Jerry Smyers - STO Treasurer, STO Board of Directors, and STO Abbot
