Remodeled zendo Atlanta Soto Zen Center March 2016

"And it came to pass that the rains came. And then the deluge. And then the floods. And lo, the leaves fell all at once, and came to rest on the flat roof. And, as foretold, the leaks ensued. And then the damp, and the dank, and the mold. Sensitive and allergic denizens of the community fled in droves. Others stayed, and cleaned up the mess. And so, the zendo was reborn."
— Archives of the Silent Thunder Order

Perhaps "zendo reno" would be more appropriate, but far less dramatic. And in truth, the scope of the provenance, process, and progress of the renovation of our wonderful ASZC zendo at Zonolite, has spanned about nine months; so the metaphor may be apt. In any case, we have many to thank for the resurrection and marked improvement of our meditation hall. While we should, in principle, be able to sit anywhere — on top of an ant nest being a notable exception, as I can testify from personal experience — it is a real pleasure to have a sitting space designed for that purpose, and conducive to the experience of simplicity, uncluttered cleanliness, consistent and quiet contemplation.

The Atlantic Soto Zen Centre is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Halifax is an important educational and medical centre for the Maritime Provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland Labrador. Soto Zen instruction and practice has been offered in various locations in and around the city since 1981. Presently services are offered each Sunday at the Dalhousie University Multifaith Centre, 1321 Edward Street. Our practice leader volunteers as the Soto Zen Buddhist Chaplain for the University and coordinator for the Multifaith Centre. It has proven to be a win-win situation with the University students, faculty, and staff, as well as the general public, having access to weekly Zen instruction and practice while at the same time providing the members of the Zen Centre with a clean comfortable practice space. Students from Dalhousie and other area Universities who study Comparative or Eastern Religion take part in Sunday services to get a hands-on experience of Zen Buddhist practice. Our members have benefitted greatly through the ongoing teaching and training opportunities offered by Abbot Elliston, Roshi and the Mokurai Silent Thunder Order. Any members of other STO affiliates who have the opportunity to visit Canada are heartily welcomed. Four members of the Halifax group are presently planning on attending the upcoming five day retreat at the Watershed Retreat Center, in Haysville North Carolina, on April 5-10. You are invited to take part, even if for just one day, and get to know your northern Dharma sisters and brothers.
